We know that everyone these days has to manage stress. Life is hectic, and getting more so. People with MDD have a special need for stress management.

  1. When you have a chronic health condition, you have probably lost something such as activities, competencies, even the ability to work. That is stressful in itself and adds to your total stress.
  2. Many people with MDD find that stress makes MDD worse although it can't be said to cause MDD.
  3. In general stress has been shown to impede the immune system which means you are more likely to get sick which is itself more stressful. Even a cold can affect MDD symptoms.
  4. MDD can make you feel judged by others around you and misunderstood even by family members. That increases isolation and stress.

6 ways to manage stress

  1. Have a circle of friends and stay involved with people. Have a social support system, don't put all your eggs in one basket, stay flexible.
  2. Get moderate exercise
  3. Laugh as much as you can, look for belly laughs, help others laugh.
  4. Have a belief system, even if not in God, believe in sonething bigger than you. Repetitive activities which are usually associated with prayer and faith are stress reducing.
  5. Believe you will be healthy regardless of your health; what you believe about your health will probably happen. Look on the bright side, be optimistic.
  6. Maintain a good diet, eat your meals on time, avoid salt, caffeine and alcohol. Don't smoke, eat like your mother told you!
